Commissioned by the German newspaper DIE ZEIT for their student magazine ZEIT Campus, this project visualizes the hidden danger of WWII bombs and munitions scattered across the North and Baltic Sea floors. Leaking toxins threaten marine ecosystems, while scientists race to recover them with robotic technology.
The visualizations aimed to communicate a multifaceted and data-rich topic in a way that remained both accurate and accessible. A combination of cartography, schematic drawings, graphs, and diagrams was used to illustrate the scale of the problem and the scientific efforts to address it. Each element contributed a different perspective—geographic context, technical insight, and data relationships—coming together to form a coherent visual narrative about the hidden dangers beneath the sea surface.
Data visualization: Philipp Doringer & Nadia Iachini
Magazine graphic design: Frieder Oelze
